Selecting Drills for Assessment Success

What’s going on REPers?! By now, I’m sure you’ve created your SMART goals for the next 3,6 and 12 months. Hopefully you’re off to a great start.

When designing assessments for the athletes I work with, here is my mental checklist and reminder to effectively conduct a quality session:

  • Are you creating something that is simple?
  • Are you creating something that is repeatable?
  • Can you articulate the reason for each drill?

By keeping these questions in mind, it helps keep me accountable and constantly looking for ways to get the most out of those I assess in a straightforward and reliable manner.

KEEP IT SUPER SIMPLE

Utilizing the KISS method when it comes to assessing your students will go a long way. Picking simple drills will allow you to frequently reevaluate and allow your students to reflect on what they are learning.

Drills such as v-sit twists, standing long jump, vertical jump or repeat burpee conditioning are excellent to use as they are repeatable, simple and can be tracked over time. Also, the common theme with regards to simplicity and repeatability is buy in. Students generally perform better, knowing what the task is and like to compare their results to others as well as to their previously tracked assessments.

Training templates allow you to build a program in 15-30 min once a year! Every teacher/coach can have a way to monitor and track individual progress and success.

ON REPEAT!

If another coach or teacher came into your assessment, they should be able to set up, instruct and run your assessment the same way! Having your assessments being repeatable will make it reliable.
