How to Stay Active with Seasonal Affective Disorder
Hey REP team! Coach Christmas here with some information about how to beat the Winter Blues!!
As the winter chill sets in and the days get shorter, many of us might find ourselves feeling a bit down or less energetic than usual. If you’ve noticed this change in your mood during the colder months, you might be experiencing something called Seasonal Affective Disorder, or SAD for short. But don’t worry, there are ways to tackle it while keeping up with your fitness routine!
So, what exactly is SAD? Well, think of it as feeling the “winter blues.” When the days become shorter and darker, it can mess with your body’s internal clock, making you feel more tired and moody. It’s like your brain is missing out on the sunshine it craves, which can affect your mood and energy levels.
Now, here’s the good news: exercise can be a powerful tool in fighting SAD! When you work out, your brain releases feel-good chemicals called endorphins. These little guys can boost your mood and help you feel more positive. Plus, staying active can give you more energy and improve your sleep, which are two things that SAD tends to mess with.
Here are some tips to tackle SAD while keeping up with your gym routine:
Let There Be Light
Since SAD is triggered by the lack of sunlight, try to get as much natural light as possible. Open those curtains wide during the day, go for a walk outside when it's sunny, or even consider using a special lamp that mimics sunlight. It can make a big difference in how you feel.
Buddy Up
Working out with a friend can make exercising more fun, motivating and sustainable. Plus, chatting and laughing while you exercise can help lift your spirits!
Mix It Up
Don’t get stuck in the same old routine. Try different workouts to keep things interesting. Maybe swap a treadmill run for a class. Try some new exercises, keeping your workouts fresh can help keep your motivation high.
Create a Routine
Setting a regular exercise schedule can give you something to look forward to and help establish a sense of consistency. Whether you prefer morning workouts before school/work or afternoons and weekends, make the time and stick to it.
Mind-Body Connection
Look into trying activities like Yoga or meditation. Both can help you relax, manage stress, and improve your mood. Sometimes giving your mind a little TLC can work wonders for your overall well being
It’s important to remember that it’s okay to be a little off during the winter months, but you don’t have to let SAD take over! By staying active, getting some sunlight, and mixing up your routine, you can beat those winter blues and keep shining throughout the colder season!
